New Army Chief Shaibu Vows To Crush Lakurawa, Other Terrorist Groups In Northern Nigeria

The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, has pledged to decisively eliminate the emerging terrorist group, Lakurawa, and other violent organisations threatening security in Northern Nigeria.

Shaibu made the commitment on Wednesday during his Senate screening in Abuja, following his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Highlighting his extensive military experience, the new Army Chief recalled his time as a commanding officer in Borno State—one of the key strongholds of Boko Haram—where he played a crucial role in counterinsurgency operations.

“We defeated Boko Haram insurgents in 2015, and many of them surrendered during my tenure,” Shaibu told lawmakers. “Through the use of advanced technology and strategic planning, we were able to neutralize numerous terrorist elements over the past five years.”

He assured that under his leadership, the Nigerian Army would implement a strategic, people-focused approach to national security while prioritizing the welfare and professional growth of soldiers.

“The Army will deal decisively with the new bandit group known as Lakurawa,” Shaibu stated. “Tackling insecurity requires a collective national effort. While security operations are costly, we will ensure optimal use of available resources.”

Following his presentation, members of the Senate Committee commended his record and asked him to “take a bow and go,” signifying their approval of his appointment.

Major General Shaibu is among the newly appointed service chiefs named by President Tinubu in October 2025. Others include Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E. A. P. Undiendeye, retained his position.

The appointments were confirmed in a statement issued by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication.
