AfCFTA: Borno State Begins Export of Plastic Products

As part of ongoing efforts to revive the state’s economy, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has announced the commencement of plastic product exports from Borno State — a major step toward industrialization and economic independence.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the Borno Plastic Factory in the new Maiduguri Industrial Area on Thursday, Governor Zulum said the initiative aligns with his administration’s goal of reducing the state’s reliance on federal allocations.

“I am pleased to announce that Borno people no longer need to import plastic materials. Our products are already being sold across Nigeria and to neighbouring countries. With continued investment in local industries, our aim is for Borno to sustain itself without depending on the Federation Account,” Zulum said.

The governor revealed that the factory has successfully begun international exports, with finished products shipped to Chad and Cameroon.

Originally established under former Governor Kashim Shettima, the factory was revived by the Zulum administration as part of its broader economic recovery and development agenda. To ensure long-term sustainability, the state transitioned the plant into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with Tatabe Global Services handling daily operations, production, and marketing, while the government provides policy oversight and an enabling environment.

Operating now at full capacity, the factory manufactures plastic chairs, tables, basins, and other household materials, creating hundreds of direct jobs for residents and supporting local livelihoods.

Governor Zulum was accompanied on the tour by Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, alongside principal officers of the Assembly and other senior government officials.
