Tanzania’s Samia Hassan sworn in after deadly election violence

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared winner of last Wednesday’s election with 98 percent of the nearly 32 million votes cast.

This marks the 65-year-old’s first elected term after she assumed office in 2021 following President John Magufuli’s death.

Deadly protests erupted after the poll, prompting a government curfew and internet shutdown. Opposition reports claim about 500 deaths, but authorities denied the figures.

Hassan was sworn in Monday at a restricted ceremony in Dodoma, attended by regional leaders from Somalia, Burundi, Mozambique, and Zambia.

In her speech, she urged citizens to “protect unity and collaboration,” while confirming that some arrested protesters were foreigners.

Tension remains high in Dar-es-Salaam, where streets are deserted and shops closed. The opposition CHADEMA, which was barred from the race, rejected the results and demanded a new election, calling the vote a “sham.”
