Edo State Allocates N1 Billion Soft Loans to Support Market Women

Edo State has approved N1 billion in soft loans to empower market women and boost their businesses, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, announced on Saturday.

Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, Abdallah said the initiative is part of the state government’s SHINE Agenda, aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting grassroots women who are key drivers of the local economy.

“Through this program, 54,000 women will benefit from entrepreneurial training, access to microfinance, and skills development,” she said, highlighting Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment.

Abdallah added that the state government has ensured women’s participation in governance, with 35 percent of cabinet positions held by women. “Empowering women is not just a promise here; it is a lived reality,” she emphasized.

The commissioner also highlighted ongoing social protection efforts, including rehabilitation and shelter services for trafficked women, rape survivors, and victims of domestic violence, ensuring that children affected are properly cared for.

On skills development, Abdallah noted that the Uromi and Igarra Skills Acquisition Centres have been revitalized, producing over 140 graduates in 2025. She also announced that the Evbuomodu Centre is being upgraded in partnership with the Edo State Skills Development Agency to expand training opportunities for women and youth.

Abdallah expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo and Edesili Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the Edo First Lady, for their support in achieving the ministry’s goals.

“Our vision is to build a future where every woman and child in Edo State can live with dignity, contribute meaningfully, and realize their full potential. Together, we will continue to make Edo shine brighter,” she said.

The state government’s investment in women’s empowerment is part of a broader strategy to foster inclusive growth and sustainable development across Edo State.Headline news
