The Nigerian Senate has dismissed reports of a plot to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling them false and aimed at causing confusion.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele clarified during plenary that no impeachment discussions had taken place, adding that remarks attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu were misrepresented. He said Kalu had confirmed this in their conversation.
“There is no tension in this Senate. We are focused on delivering for Nigerians and will not allow rumours to derail our work,” Bamidele stated, as senators reaffirmed confidence in Akpabio’s leadership.
Kalu had earlier mentioned an attempt to impeach Akpabio but said it was thwarted, stressing that the Senate remains “one big family.”

Since Akpabio’s election in 2023, he has faced recurring impeachment rumours and internal disputes. Despite tensions over his perceived closeness to President Tinubu, the Senate maintains its support for his leadership.
