Nigeria Needs Collaboration, Not Confrontation, CSO Tells Trump

Hope Alive Initiative (HAI), a civil society organisation, has called on US President Donald Trump to work collaboratively with Nigeria to address its security challenges instead of adopting a confrontational stance.

The statement comes after Nigeria was recently designated as “a country of particular concern” by Trump over alleged persecution of Christians, accompanied by threats of possible military action.

Ernest Omoarelojie, HAI’s director of media and communications, said military threats undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and diplomatic efforts to manage its complex security issues effectively. While acknowledging the tragic loss of lives due to extremist groups, the organisation emphasised that the crisis affects all Nigerians, regardless of faith.

“This is not a one-dimensional religious conflict but a complex, multidimensional security crisis affecting Christians, Muslims, and adherents of all faiths alike,” the statement said.

HAI urged President Trump and the US government to prioritize collaboration with Nigeria to enhance regional stability, strengthen counter-terrorism efforts, and ensure the safety of all citizens.

The group also called for the support of the international community—including the US, UK, China, EU, AU, and ECOWAS—to help Nigeria tackle insecurity.

Highlighting Nigeria’s efforts, HAI noted increased security and defence budgets, military operations, community-based initiatives, inter-agency collaboration, and interfaith dialogue. The organisation stressed that these measures demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to protecting all citizens, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
