20 local governments in Katsina sign peace accord with bandits amid renewed attacks

The number of local government areas (LGAs) in Katsina State entering peace agreements with armed bandit groups has risen to 20. Previously, 12 LGAs had reportedly signed deals aimed at ending persistent attacks and kidnappings across the state.

The accords, brokered by community leaders and security agencies, are intended to restore peace and stability in affected areas. Over the past weeks, nine LGAs—including Batsari, Kankara, Kurfi, Musawa, Danmusa, Jibia, Faskari, Sabuwa, and Dandume—entered into peace arrangements with the armed groups. On October 12, three additional LGAs—Malumfashi, Funtua, and Bakori—also reached agreements.

The most recent peace meeting took place in Kakumi, Bakori LGA, bringing together representatives from the bandits and delegates from the three LGAs. Reports indicate that armed groups arrived on motorcycles, fired gunshots into the air, and departed within an hour. Journalists were barred from recording the proceedings due to security concerns.

Media sources indicate that the bandits requested the release of detained members and pledged to free captives in their custody. Local authorities reportedly agreed to handle these requests through formal security and correctional channels.

Despite the accords, many residents remain apprehensive, citing ongoing attacks in some areas. One resident, who asked not to be named, said:

> “If this agreement holds, our communities may have a chance to harvest and rebuild. Many people in the southern and eastern parts of Katsina have faced serious losses.”

Of the state’s 34 LGAs, 20 have now signed the peace deal, leaving 14 yet to participate. Observers continue to stress the need for sustained security measures and clear communication from authorities to ensure lasting stability.
