Mentally unstable man stabs NSCDC officer to death in Ondo

A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer was stabbed to death on Thursday by a 19-year-old boy in Oba Ile, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Witnesses said the boy’s mother had called NSCDC personnel for help after her son began acting violently and she feared he could harm himself or disturb the community. Two officers arrived to restrain him, but during the struggle, the teenager allegedly overpowered one of them, seized a sharp object, and stabbed the officer.

The officer was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

An eyewitness said the incident happened while the officers were attempting to chain the boy to prevent further harm. Despite being armed, the officer was reportedly caught off guard during the scuffle.

NSCDC spokesperson in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident, calling it unfortunate. He explained that the officers were trying to take the teenager to a treatment facility when the attack happened.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, also confirmed the death, stating that the officer died while receiving medical care.

The case highlights Nigeria’s growing mental health crisis, with millions struggling without access to treatment.

With fewer than 300 psychiatrists serving a population of over 200 million, mental health support remains scarce. Rising drug abuse, trauma from insecurity, and limited facilities continue to deepen the challenge.

Authorities say investigations into the fatal incident are ongoing.
