The Captain of Ikeja Golf Club, AbdulRasheed Adebisi, says the schedule for gross players at this year’s Ikeja Golf Club Championship was extended to three days to help them earn recognition from the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
The WAGR evaluates results from more than 2,600 amateur tournaments worldwide each year—including selected professional events—and updates its rankings every Wednesday. Players are rated based on their average performances over a rolling period.
Until now, the gross players’ category at the Ikeja Championship lasted only two days. With the new three-day format introduced for the 2025 edition, Adebisi believes the top contenders will have a better chance to gain ranking points and advance their careers. The annual championship holds every November.
Adebisi explained the week’s schedule:
Monday: Caddies
Tuesday: Professionals and guests
Wednesday: Veterans and ladies
Thursday: Special kitty
Friday: Gross players, considered the main contenders
“Before this year, the event for gross players was held over two days,” Adebisi said. “We extended it to three days so the championship can meet WAGR requirements.”
Meanwhile, Amusa Kelani, winner of the 2025 Ikeja Club Championship, described this year’s competition as one of the toughest he has faced, admitting he felt under pressure at one point.
Kelani finished ahead of runners-up Aruna Sharma and Jimoh Ogundare to claim the title.
“It was a very challenging tournament,” he said. “At a stage, I was extremely tense, but I managed to settle down by the 16th hole. I’m grateful to come out as the winner.”
