President Bola Tinubu reinforced his administration’s commitment to the welfare of military personnel, injured officers, and families of fallen heroes by donating N200 million to the Nigerian Legion at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal launch in Abuja.
Key Donations and Ceremony
The National Assembly, through Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, contributed N100 million.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike donated N20 million.
President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and service chiefs were decorated with the remembrance poppy.
President’s Appeal and Commendation
President Tinubu urged all Nigerians, institutions, and businesses to donate generously, stating, “As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answered the call to serve.” He commended the Armed Forces for securing communities, highlighting the surrender of insurgents, neutralization of key terrorists, and improved maritime security.
The President also confirmed his administration’s actions to improve military welfare, including enhanced allowances, upgraded barracks, strengthened healthcare (like expanding the Defence Health Maintenance Services Limited), and modernizing pension verification through BVN/NIN integration.
Symbol of Remembrance
The Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, described the emblem as a symbol of support for veterans and their families, asserting that supporting the appeal fund affirms, “Nigeria cares.”
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed on January 15th to honour fallen soldiers and living veterans.
