The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across its member countries.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.

The meeting was called following a spate of coups and failed mutinies affecting several nations within the region.

Touray emphasized that these events underscore the “need for serious reflection on the future of democracy in the region and the urgent priority of strengthening community security.”
