I LEFT N300BN, BUT MET N600BN’: FUBARA REVEALS RIVERS’ FUNDS DOUBLED DURING EMERGENCY RULE

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that the state’s financial standing significantly improved during the period of emergency rule declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealing that available funds doubled within that time.

The governor explained that before the emergency rule, the state treasury stood at about ₦300 billion, but upon his return to office, the figure had risen to approximately ₦600 billion.

Fubara made this known on Wednesday while commissioning the Obodhi–Ozochi road and bridge project in Ahoada East and West Local Government Areas of the state.

His remarks come amid recent accusations by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which last week alleged that the governor carried out expenditures without legislative approval. The lawmakers, speaking through the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, claimed that Fubara awarded contracts to close associates, including individuals allegedly linked to the burning of the Assembly complex.

Responding to the allegations, the governor insisted that state funds are being judiciously applied to meaningful projects, stressing that his administration operates with transparency and accountability.

“I want the whole world to know that when we stepped aside during the emergency rule, official records show that we left over ₦300 billion,” Fubara said. “When we returned, we met about ₦600 billion. Every kobo spent is properly documented, and the evidence will speak for itself within the next 12 months.”

He maintained that there is nothing questionable about his handling of public funds, describing himself as sincere and free from any form of financial misconduct.

“No one can link me to fraud or any wrongdoing. Your money is safe, and the records of how it has been spent are intact,” he stated.

Fubara added that his administration prioritises completing and commissioning projects rather than wasting resources on ceremonial flag-offs. According to him, funds saved from such practices are redirected to development initiatives that directly benefit the people.

“We prefer to commission projects and show you exactly what your money has achieved, rather than spend on unnecessary ceremonies,” he said.

The governor also reassured residents that his background emphasises proper record-keeping, urging them not to worry about the management of state finances.

“I have always worked with proper documentation and accountability, even before this administration. The records are there,” he added.

Fubara reiterated that public funds under his watch are being deployed solely for the development and welfare of Rivers State residents.

It will be recalled that President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State in March, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the State House of Assembly for six months. During the period, retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas served as the sole administrator of the state.

The suspended officials were reinstated on September 17, 2025.
