President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) board, appointing Sanusi Garba Oseni as its new Chairman.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that the reconstitution followed the Senate’s confirmation of members of the commission.
Oseni, who began his service at NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later rose to the position of Vice Chairman, assumed office as Chairman on December 1, 2025. According to Onanuga, his appointment will run until the completion of his ten-year tenure at the commission, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

The Vice Chairman of the board is Yusuf Ali, who was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022. His designation as Vice Chairman also took effect on December 1, 2025, and will last until the end of his first term.
Other members of the reconstituted board include Nathan Shatti, who is serving a second term as Commissioner after his initial appointment in January 2017. Afe Akpeneye is also returning for a second term, having first joined the commission in January 2017.
Aisha Bello, first appointed as a Commissioner in December 2020, is likewise serving a second term, while Chidi Ike, who joined NERC in February 2022, is returning for another stint as Commissioner.
Fouad Animashaun is the only new member of the board, commencing his first term as Commissioner in December 2025. The Presidency described him as an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector. He most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu has charged the reconstituted NERC board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing reforms in the power sector, urging members to carry out their duties strictly in line with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.
