President Bola Tinubu has called on governors, APC members, and other stakeholders to back the establishment of state police and ensure the effective implementation of local government autonomy. He appealed during the 14th APC National Caucus meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Tinubu urged governors to fully support the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy, stressing that it is not enough for the ruling to exist on paper—allocations meant for local councils must be directly remitted to them.
The President also advocated for greater inclusion of women within the APC National Caucus to promote gender balance. His call for state police comes amid growing concerns about security across the country.

In his opening remarks, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yelwata announced the defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to the party. With this defection, the APC now controls the entire North Central region. Governor Mutfwang, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, becomes the latest prominent figure to join the ruling party.
As part of the party’s expansion efforts, Yelwata highlighted the nationwide electronic membership registration drive, setting January 30, 2026, as the deadline for all members to complete registration.
He said the activation of the electronic system would enhance transparency, data integrity, and internal democracy. “We’ve done training at the state, zonal, and local government levels in most states. I urge all stakeholders to support the nationwide rollout of this noble activity. Let us assure new members that they have all the rights and privileges within the party, and encourage them to register their supporters. Both old and new members should complete the registration from now until January 30 to prepare for the upcoming congresses,” he said.
