EYO FESTIVAL: SANWO-OLU RECEIVES OPAMBATA

LAGOS — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has officially welcomed the 2025 Eyo Festival season by receiving the Opambata, the ceremonial staff of the Eyo Masquerade, at Lagos House, Marina. The event signals the start of activities leading up to the Adamu Orisa Play next Saturday.

The presentation coincided with a visit from families of individuals to be honoured at this year’s festival. Honourees include General Mobolaji Johnson, Lagos State’s first Military Governor; Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first civilian governor; former Third Republic governor Sir Michael Otedola; and the late Iyaloja-General, Chief Abibat Mogaji.

The ceremony, known as Ijade Opa Eyo, featured a mix of traditional songs, prayers, and cultural performances that celebrate the Adamu Orisa heritage. The Olori Eyo and Akinsiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, led the procession alongside other custodians carrying their respective Opambata staffs.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the festival as a vibrant celebration of Lagos’ culture and identity. “The Eyo Festival is a moment of pride for the state,” he said, highlighting its role in showcasing Lagos’ traditions to both residents and international visitors. He also emphasized the importance of cultural preservation, noting that without it, a society loses its sense of purpose and legacy.

The governor added that beyond Lagos’ reputation as a commercial and economic hub, the festival reaffirms the city as a centre for culture and tourism. He thanked the community for their support and participation in keeping the festival alive.

Chief Adebola Dosunmu noted that the Ijade Opa Eyo is just one of several preparatory rituals leading to the main festival, marking the official start of the celebrations.
