WIKE REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR TINUBU IN RIVERS, WARNS AGAINST POLITICAL BETRAYAL

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reiterated his steadfast support for President Bola Tinubu, stressing that political agreements must be respected while criticizing what he called opportunistic loyalty among some political actors in Rivers State.

Wike made the remarks during a visit to Rivers State, where he attended a public function and end-of-year thanksgiving service in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area. The event, hosted by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, attracted key political figures and party stakeholders from across the state.

Addressing attendees, Wike recalled that he and his supporters openly backed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, at a time when such support was politically risky in Rivers State. He emphasized that their backing was based on conviction rather than convenience, and that loyalty shown during critical moments should not be forgotten.

“Many who now publicly chant support for the President remained silent when it mattered most,” Wike said, underscoring his belief that consistency and honouring political agreements are central to stability. He warned that ignoring commitments often fuels political instability.

From Ochigba, Wike proceeded to the Rivers State Assembly Quarters, where he was received by the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule. The Speaker thanked the minister for his continued support, noting Wike’s role in maintaining stability within the legislature.

Speaking to lawmakers, Wike praised them for upholding a peace agreement in the state but criticized external political actors seeking to exploit Rivers State’s resources while deepening internal divisions. He also announced that active political engagements would resume from January next year, affirming that his camp would not shy away from contestation.

“Agreement is agreement,” Wike stated, stressing that commitments must be honoured regardless of political pressure or changing circumstances.

While the visit highlighted ongoing political alliances, Wike’s comments also shed light on existing fault lines in Rivers State politics, raising questions about whether the fragile peace can be sustained in the coming year.
