Kebbi State has boosted its security framework with the graduation of 819 National Forest Guards, trained to safeguard forest reserves and curb criminal activities.
The guards completed a rigorous nine-week training program held in Kalgo Local Government Area, as authorities called on Nigerians to support security agencies with timely intelligence and collaboration.
At the graduation ceremony on Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida urged local communities and traditional rulers to cooperate with the newly recruited guards, emphasizing that community support is essential to tackling banditry and other crimes in forested areas.
The recruits were trained in early warning systems, patrol operations, ambush tactics, and handling of AK-47 rifles. Their training was jointly overseen by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the military, highlighting a coordinated national security effort.
Tafida explained that the forest guards would supplement existing security forces, preventing criminals from using forest reserves as hideouts or operational bases.
Representing the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia announced that the guards would be deployed immediately to vulnerable forest corridors and ungoverned areas.
Hadejia added that Kebbi is among seven states selected for the pilot phase of the National Forest Guard initiative, with Arewa, Augie, Dandi, and Danko-Wasagu LGAs chosen for initial deployment.
“The newly trained guards will be immediately stationed in high-risk forest areas,” Hadejia said, noting that the program aims to restore safety and weaken bandit networks in rural communities.
Residents across Kebbi State expressed optimism that the deployment of the forest guards will enhance security and bring much-needed relief to areas long threatened by criminal activities.
