The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the state government’s silence over killings in Shanga Local Government Area, warning that insecurity, political intimidation, and economic hardship continue to worsen across the country.

In a New Year message, the party’s state chairman, Safiyanu Bala, urged Nigerians not to allow celebrations to overshadow the suffering of citizens, stressing that insecurity, hunger, and injustice remain widespread.
He accused the government of shrinking democratic space by intimidating opposition figures and coercing politicians to defect to the ruling party, describing the trend as a serious threat to democracy. According to him, recent political developments nationwide point to growing dangers to democratic principles.

The ADC also criticised economic policies, particularly taxation measures, saying they have increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians already struggling with high living costs and insecurity.
Bala described the security situation in Yauri Emirate, especially Shanga, as alarming, alleging that innocent residents have been killed for several consecutive days without any meaningful response from the state government.

He questioned the government’s apparent indifference, asking whether the lives of Shanga residents mattered less than politics, and noted that security agencies respond swiftly to opposition activities but show little urgency when civilians are attacked.
The party said residents of Shanga are not seeking political favors but are demanding protection, justice, and immediate intervention to stop the violence and save lives.
