“OUR SUCCESS IN 2027 MUST BE MORE THAN A NATIONAL VICTORY”: INEC CHAIRMAN VOWS TO CONDUCT CREDIBLE ELECTION IN 2027

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has called on staff of the Commission to step up their commitment towards delivering what he described as the most free, fair and credible election Nigeria has ever witnessed in 2027.

Amupitan reiterated that INEC is fully prepared to conduct an election that will be transparent, credible and unquestionable during the 2027 general polls.

He made the remarks on Friday in Lagos at the Commission’s Induction and Strategic Retreat, attended by national commissioners, the secretary to the commission, resident electoral commissioners, administrative secretaries and directors.

According to him, the responsibility before the Commission is enormous, stressing that Nigerians and the wider African continent are watching closely.

“The task ahead is not an easy one. It will require long hours, dedication and the ability to withstand intense public scrutiny,” he said.

He added that the 2027 general election must not only meet expectations but also represent a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Amupitan urged INEC officials to aim beyond minimum standards, expressing his vision of building an institution that earns global respect.

“I want us to create a Commission that is recognised worldwide. Let it be said that during our tenure, INEC emerged as Africa’s leading election management body — a symbol of integrity, technological excellence and strong democratic values,” he stated.

The INEC chairman maintained that the Commission has the capacity to deliver a world-class election driven by technology and transparency.

“Our achievement in 2027 should go beyond national success. It should set a benchmark for the entire continent and prove that INEC can organise a credible, technology-driven election that is beyond reproach,” he added.

It will be recalled that in February 2023, former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, advised opposition parties dissatisfied with the election outcome to seek redress in court.

Yakubu made the statement amid calls by the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party for his resignation over alleged irregularities. He insisted that the election was free and fair, stressing that legal channels exist to address any grievances.
