AMOTEKUN INTERCEPTS SUSPICIOUS TRUCK IN ONDO, ARRESTS 38 PASSENGERS

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, have arrested 38 men found inside a truck suspected to have originated from northern Nigeria.

The men were intercepted on Sunday in the Cathedral area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, while travelling in a brand-new Mercedes-Benz truck bearing the registration number Jigawa GML 335 XR. Their movement raised suspicion after preliminary questioning revealed that none of the passengers could clearly state a definite destination within the state.

Confirming the arrest, the Commander of the Ondo Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that the suspects’ explanations were inconsistent and unconvincing. He added that the area where the driver claimed to have picked up the passengers is widely regarded as a location prone to extremist and criminal activities, which further heightened concern among security operatives.

According to Adeleye, all the arrested individuals will undergo thorough profiling and investigation to determine their identities, intentions, and possible links to criminal networks. He stressed that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted according to the law, while those cleared of wrongdoing would be returned to their respective states of origin.

The Amotekun commander assured residents of Ondo State that the situation was under control and urged them to remain calm. He also appealed to the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help maintain peace and security across the state.

A security source revealed that one of the passengers was allegedly found in possession of a uniform with the inscription “Commander,” along with some charms. The individual reportedly claimed to be a hunter and said the uniform was used for his work, but he was unable to give a clear explanation regarding his destination in Ondo State.

The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns in the South West following an emergency security meeting held by governors in the region in November 2025. The meeting was convened in response to rising insecurity and attacks linked to criminal elements, particularly from northern parts of the country. At the meeting, the governors also reaffirmed their support for the establishment of state police.

Tensions in the region have since been heightened by a deadly attack on the National Park in Oyo State, where several security personnel reportedly lost their lives, further underscoring the need for vigilance and proactive security measures.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians questioning whether the arrested individuals’ constitutional right to free movement was violated, while others argue that the prevailing security challenges justify increased scrutiny to prevent potential threats.
