The Akran of Badagry in Lagos State, His Royal Majesty Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away.
A highly placed source close to the palace confirmed the monarch’s demise to AN24 on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his death are yet to be officially disclosed, and the Akran Palace is expected to issue a formal statement in due course.
Oba Aholu Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, and had reigned for nearly five decades, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Lagos State.

Born on September 18, 1936, the late monarch was a former journalist before becoming the custodian of the ancient stool of Badagry.
During his reign, he was widely regarded as a symbol of unity, peace, and progress in the historic town of Badagry. He played a key role in community development and was known as a great lover of his people.

As the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, his wisdom, experience, and leadership influenced traditional institutions across the state.
The passing of Oba Aholu Menu-Toyi I marks the end of an era for Badagry and the traditional institution in Lagos.
