FUNKE AKINDELE MAKES HISTORY AS ‘BEHIND THE SCENES’ CROSSES N2BN

Nollywood star and filmmaker Funke Akindele has made history once again as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, surpassed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, becoming the first Nollywood movie to reach this milestone.

FilmOne Entertainment, the movie’s distributor, confirmed the achievement on Monday via a post on X, revealing that the film has now grossed ₦2,103,039,706 in ticket sales.

Announcing the record, FilmOne described Behind The Scenes as having “officially broken and shattered records,” noting that it is not only the highest-grossing Nollywood film in Africa but also the top-grossing Nigerian film in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The distributor highlighted that Akindele has solidified her position as West Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker, becoming the first director, writer, and producer to top the African box office for three consecutive years—a feat unprecedented in the region.

FilmOne also expressed gratitude to audiences, emphasizing that the film’s success reflects not just commercial triumph but a cultural movement fueled by strong word-of-mouth and audience loyalty.

Behind The Scenes had previously crossed ₦1 billion before climbing to ₦1.77 billion, and its continued momentum has now cemented its place at the top of Nollywood’s all-time box office rankings.

The film features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and several other established and emerging talents.

Centered on the theme of black tax, Behind The Scenes delves into the emotional, social, and financial pressures faced by individuals supporting extended family members. Its relatable storyline has resonated particularly with young adults, helping sustain high cinema attendance across Nigeria and West Africa.

Fans attribute the film’s success to its compelling storytelling, strong cast, aggressive marketing, and Akindele’s enduring appeal as a filmmaker who consistently delivers commercially successful projects.

This record-breaking performance adds to Akindele’s already impressive list of box office achievements, following previous hits like Everybody Loves Jenifa, which set multiple opening-week and cumulative revenue records.

With its cinema run ongoing and international markets contributing to its earnings, Behind The Scenes is being hailed as a landmark for Nollywood, signaling the industry’s growing ability to produce billion-naira blockbusters with global reach.
