ISLAMIC CLERIC WHO SAVED 262 CHRISTIANS DURING PLATEAU ATTACK DIES

Abubakar Abdullahi, the Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who famously sheltered 262 Christians during deadly communal violence, has passed away.

The cleric died on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos, according to his son, Salah Abubakar, who confirmed the development on Friday.

CAUSE OF DEATH

Salah disclosed that his father had been battling health issues linked to a heart condition.

“He died ten days after he was admitted. He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem. He’d go for check-ups and return. His health hadn’t been stable since the diagnosis,” he said.

The late Imam died at the age of 90, leaving behind 19 children12 boys and seven girls.

THE HEROIC ACT THAT DEFINED HIS LEGACY

In June 2018, during violent religious and communal clashes that affected at least 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, Imam Abubakar took a courageous stand that would later earn him global recognition.

As attacks spread, he hid 262 Christians inside a mosque and his personal residence, protecting them until the violence subsided. His actions saved hundreds of lives at a time when fear and bloodshed dominated the area.

GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Imam Abubakar’s bravery drew international attention. In 2019, he received the International Religious Freedom Award from the United States Department of State, honouring his exceptional courage and commitment to peace across religious lines.

A BRIEF BACKSTORY

Plateau State has long struggled with cycles of ethno-religious violence, particularly in rural communities. In such an environment, Imam Abubakar’s decision to protect those outside his faith stood as a powerful symbol of humanity, tolerance, and moral leadership.

His actions continue to be cited as one of Nigeria’s most profound examples of interfaith solidarity.

The late cleric will be laid to rest today after Jumma’at prayers in Nghar village.
