‘I’M STILL THE GOVERNOR’: FUBARA REASSERTS AUTHORITY AMID FRESH IMPEACHMENT PLOT

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his leadership and commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.

The governor made the statement on Saturday during the grand finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament. He emphasised his determination to continue fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities as the state’s chief executive.

Governor Fubara described the successful conclusion of the week-long tournament as evidence that Rivers State remains secure. He urged residents to disregard “misleading narratives on social media.”

“I’m here, I’m still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we promised the people,” Fubara said. “The peaceful conduct of the tournament, and the president publicly noting that no incident occurred, demonstrates that Rivers is safe. That is the core responsibility of government—we must move forward.”

He added, “The safety of lives and property for everyone conducting business here is my top priority. I will not, in any way, condone or support actions that could endanger anyone.”

Rivers State has recently experienced another round of political tension following a clash between Governor Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

On January 16, a Port Harcourt High Court issued an interim order preventing the state’s chief judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against the governor and his deputy. Despite the court ruling, the House of Assembly claimed that Chief Judge Simeon Amadi had acknowledged receipt of the impeachment notice.

As discussions around impeachment continue, questions remain about who truly holds authority in the state and whether the ongoing political crisis in Rivers will be resolved ahead of the 2027 elections.
