FG CONDOLES WITH SOUTH AFRICA, MOZAMBIQUE, ZIMBABWE OVER DEVASTATING FLOODS

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its condolences to the governments and citizens of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe following the tragic loss of lives caused by recent floods affecting the region.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sympathy for the human and material losses sustained due to the severe flooding.

“Nigeria is deeply concerned about the secondary humanitarian impacts of the floods, including food insecurity, outbreaks of disease, and the heightened vulnerability of women, children, and other at-risk populations,” the statement read.

The government affirmed its solidarity with ongoing rescue, evacuation, and relief operations being carried out by national authorities, regional bodies, and international humanitarian organisations. It also acknowledged the resilience of the affected nations as they work toward recovery and rebuilding.

The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, further highlighted Nigeria’s concern over the increasing frequency of climate-related extreme weather events across Africa.

It stressed the importance of enhanced regional cooperation, effective early-warning systems, climate adaptation strategies, and sustained international support to lessen the humanitarian and developmental consequences of such disasters.

“Nigeria reassures the affected countries of its continued support and cooperation at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels in promoting disaster preparedness, humanitarian response, and climate resilience. The thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria are with the Governments and citizens of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and all other affected countries during this challenging time,” the statement added.

The floods have caused extensive damage across Southern Africa. South Africa declared a national disaster on Sunday after torrential rainfall destroyed homes, claimed dozens of lives, and forced thousands to seek shelter in Mozambique.

Reports indicate that more than 100 people have lost their lives, with thousands displaced, roads and bridges damaged, and communities cut off from essential services. Agricultural production has also been disrupted, raising concerns about food security, while regional weather agencies continue to issue warnings about further heavy rainfall.
