ZAMFARA STATE, NIGERIA — At least four residents were killed on Thursday evening when armed bandits attacked Gwargwaba village in Nahuce District, Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
A security analyst, Bakatsine, disclosed on Saturday via his X (formerly Twitter) account that the attackers stormed the community at about 6:00 p.m., setting multiple houses on fire during the assault.
According to the report, the victims were trapped inside their homes during the attack. The assailants also destroyed food supplies and killed villagers’ livestock, worsening the humanitarian impact on the already vulnerable community.
Bakatsine stated that the attack was a reprisal after residents allegedly refused to pay unlawful levies imposed by the bandits. The refusal reportedly angered the attackers and led to the violent retaliation.
“Bandits armed with sophisticated weapons stormed Gwargwaba village around 6pm. Four residents lost their lives, while houses, food stores, and livestock were destroyed. The attack followed the villagers’ refusal to pay illegal levies,” Bakatsine wrote.
The incident highlights persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, despite the state of emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as security agencies continue to battle armed criminal groups across parts of the country.
