LAGOS PLANS $10M REGENERATION OF MAKOKO COMMUNITY

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has unveiled plans to invest approximately $10 million in revitalising Makoko, the waterfront community that has recently drawn public attention due to demolition exercises.

Speaking at a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Renewal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that the state would contribute $2 million to the project and aims to secure an additional $8 million in counterpart funding from the United Nations.

The regeneration project focuses on a proposed “water city” initiative, which seeks to modernise the fishing community’s infrastructure and living environment. Dr. Babatunde explained that the project has not officially begun and will depend on the availability of funding and the support of development partners.

He also noted that recent government actions, including the removal of structures located beneath high-tension power lines, were intended to mitigate safety risks for residents, particularly in areas where cables hang dangerously low over the lagoon. Only buildings directly under these power lines were affected at this stage.

Dr. Babatunde added that the government initially considered two options for Makoko’s redevelopment — a shoreline extension and the water city plan. Environmental assessments and expert recommendations led officials to prioritise the water city project as a more eco-friendly solution.

However, the demolition of some homes has sparked protests from residents, who are demanding compensation for lost property and assurances that no further demolitions will occur. In response, the Lagos State House of Assembly has scheduled discussions with community representatives to address their concerns.

The announcement highlights ongoing efforts by the state to balance urban renewal, public safety, and the rights of long-standing communities while pursuing modernisation and improved infrastructure across Lagos.
