BANDITS KILL KATSINA DPO, THREE ATTACKERS NEUTRALISED

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rimi Local Government Area in Katsina State, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, was killed in the line of duty on Friday, February 13, 2026, while leading an operation against suspected cattle rustlers.

The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Commissioner Nasir Mu’azu.

According to the statement, credible reports from community leaders—including the ward councillor, APC members, the Village Head of Karare, and the District Head of Rimi—alerted authorities to suspected rustlers operating in Magaji town under Maje-Gobir Ward late Thursday night.

Upon verification, the DPO mobilised a team of security operatives and swiftly moved to the area. Residents of Magajen Gobir had already organised to confront the invaders, leading to a prolonged gun battle that extended into the early hours of Friday, coinciding with Subh (dawn) prayers.

Many stolen cattle were recovered during the initial confrontation. In subsequent clashes in neighbouring areas, two men and several young girls were reportedly shot, though additional animals were retrieved through the combined efforts of residents and security forces.

The DPO personally led the follow-up operation to the suspects’ hideout. During the intense exchange of fire, his rifle reportedly malfunctioned, and he was fatally shot by one of the rustlers, identified as their leader, Maigemu.

Three security personnel sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Katsina Teaching Hospital. The late officer’s remains have been released to his family in Zaria, Kaduna State, for burial.

The ministry praised the bravery of security operatives and community members in repelling the attack and recovering most of the stolen livestock.

Three of the rustlers were neutralised during the operation.

“The Ministry mourns the loss of CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir and prays for Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannatul Firdausi, noting that his sacrifice in the line of duty will not be forgotten,” the statement said.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating criminal elements and ensuring the safety and security of all residents across Katsina State.
