NIGERIAN AIR FORCE MOVES TO ACQUIRE 46 NEW FIGHTER AIRCRAFT IN MAJOR FLEET EXPANSION

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is accelerating a major modernisation drive, fast-tracking the procurement of 46 new aircraft to significantly boost its combat capability, airpower projection, and overall operational readiness.

The centerpiece of the expansion is the acquisition of 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack Aircraft, which will enhance strike missions and serve as advanced platforms for pilot training.

The broader package also includes:

– 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters

– 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters

These additions are intended to strengthen both fixed-wing offensive operations and rotary-wing support across the full spectrum of air missions.

NAF spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame quoted Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who disclosed the progress on Thursday, February 12, 2026, during the inauguration of new infrastructural projects at NAF Base Kaduna.

“Strategic engagements in the United States, Italy, and Türkiye are already yielding results. We are fast-tracking the procurement of 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack Aircraft, 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters, all aimed at enhancing our operational effectiveness across the full spectrum of air operations,” Aneke said.

The Air Chief linked the incoming aircraft to parallel investments in training and welfare infrastructure, particularly for student pilots who will transition to these advanced platforms.

He commissioned several new facilities, including:

– Six blocks of 12 one-bedroom Student Pilots’ Quarters

– A block of six three-bedroom flats (initiated by the Ministry of Defence and completed by the NAF)

– A block of 30 one-bedroom studio apartments for airmen and airwomen at the Military Training Centre

Aneke described the projects as vital to building a professional, mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in support of national security objectives.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for sustained support of defence initiatives, including cooperation with Türkiye for helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The CAS also commended former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal HB Abubakar, for initiating the infrastructure projects, and thanked the Ministry of Defence, National Assembly, and contractors for their contributions.

Aneke urged all personnel to uphold discipline and professionalism in the use of the new facilities.

The acquisitions and infrastructure upgrades reflect the NAF’s strategic focus on modernising its fleet, improving training capacity, and ensuring long-term operational resilience amid evolving security challenges.
