RAMADAN CONCERNS: INEC CONSULTS, MAY SEEK LEGISLATIVE INTERVENTION ON 2027 POLL DATES

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged public concerns over the timing of the 2027 general elections, which coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, and indicated it may seek legislative intervention if necessary.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, disclosed this on Friday, emphasizing that the election timetable was developed in strict compliance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s Guidelines and Regulations for the Conduct of Elections.

According to INEC, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are set for Saturday, March 6, 2027. These dates follow established regulations specifying election timing for general election years.

However, the commission recognized concerns that the presidential election date coincides with Ramadan, which may affect voter participation among Muslims. INEC stated that it remains sensitive to these concerns and is consulting with stakeholders, including lawmakers and community leaders, to determine if adjustments are necessary.

“The commission wishes to assure the public that any considerations will remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements, while ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and the credibility of the 2027 elections,” the statement said.

Earlier, political figures such as former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad urged INEC to reconsider the February 20 date to prevent potential disruption to voter turnout during Ramadan.

Party primaries are currently scheduled between May 22 and June 20, 2026, ahead of the general elections.
