The House of Representatives has announced an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to address issues arising from the recently released 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The announcement was made in a statement by the House spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi, noting that members were informed via an internal memorandum from the Office of the Speaker. The statement emphasized the constitutional and national importance of the development and the need for prompt legislative attention.

Deliberations during the emergency sitting are expected to focus on legislative matters linked to INEC’s timetable, ensuring that the National Assembly fulfills its constitutional responsibilities. Members have been urged to prioritize attendance given the significance of the issues.

INEC had announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls will hold on March 6, 2027. Party primaries are slated between May 22 and June 20, 2026.

The election dates have sparked concerns among some Nigerians, particularly Muslims, due to the overlap with the holy month of Ramadan, which may affect voter turnout and the efficiency of electoral staff. Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has urged INEC to reconsider the February 20, 2027 date.

In response, INEC, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, stated that the timetable aligns with constitutional requirements, the Electoral Act, 2022, and INEC’s regulations. Haruna added that consultations are ongoing and that the commission may seek legislative guidance if necessary, while maintaining compliance with legal provisions.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, assuring the public that any updates will be communicated promptly.
