Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has spent a second night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his inability to meet the bail conditions granted in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation.

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that although administrative bail had been approved, the former governor was yet to perfect the stringent terms attached to his release as of late Tuesday evening, necessitating his continued detention.

El-Rufai was reportedly taken into custody earlier this week after honouring an EFCC invitation linked to allegations of financial impropriety and diversion of public funds during his tenure as governor. While the Commission has not publicly disclosed full details of the charges, insiders say the probe involves contract awards, fund disbursement procedures, and legacy project financing frameworks executed under his administration.

Under EFCC bail protocols, suspects are often required to provide multiple sureties, verifiable property documentation, and financial guarantees proportional to the scale of the allegations.

It was gathered that delays in securing qualified sureties and completing documentation processes contributed to the stall in meeting the bail requirements.
Legal representatives to the former governor have maintained that their client is cooperating fully with investigators and expressed confidence that the bail conditions would be perfected imminently. They also reiterated his willingness to submit himself to due process while contesting the substance of the allegations at the appropriate judicial forum.
Meanwhile, political observers note that the development has heightened public and partisan attention, given El-Rufai’s national profile and continued influence within northern political blocs and ruling party structures.

EFCC officials insist the matter remains strictly procedural and investigative, stressing that detention linked to bail perfection does not constitute a conviction but forms part of standard compliance measures in high-profile financial crime cases.

Further updates are expected as soon as bail conditions are fulfilled or formal charges are filed before a competent court.
