The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has strongly condemned the police for using teargas and excessive force against peaceful protesters advocating for electoral reforms at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

MCE called on Nigerians and its supporters to remain calm, determined, and vigilant as the group prepares legal action against both the National Assembly and the police for the violent dispersal of citizens demanding credible electoral frameworks ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement by Olawale Okunniyi, Head of the MCE National Secretariat, the group demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the police actions. It also called on the National Assembly to clarify its position on mandatory electronic transmission safeguards and to engage openly with civil society and citizens on electoral reform measures.

The statement emphasized that democracy erodes not only in dramatic moments but also when lawful dissent is met with repression and transparency is treated as optional.
Prominent members of the MCE Steering Council include Dr. Usman Bugaje, Prof. Pat Utomi, Ayuba Wabba, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, Amb Nkoyo Toyo, Hajia Bilikisu Magoro, Ene Obi, Salisu Mohammed, and Bala Zakka.

MCE stressed that citizens have both the right and responsibility to peacefully demand transparency in elections. It described the violent dispersal as a troubling signal, noting that when calls for credible elections are met with force, the issue shifts from procedure to power.
The organization reiterated its demands: a transparent investigation into the police actions, public clarification from the National Assembly regarding electronic transmission safeguards, and an open engagement process with civil society on electoral reform.

MCE concluded by urging Nigerians to remain peaceful yet resolute as the group pursues legal measures to hold both the National Assembly and the police accountable for the crackdown on peaceful protesters.
