DOMESTIC AIRLINES FAULT FCCPC OVER PRICE FIXING CLAIMS.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has criticised the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over its interim report alleging that domestic airlines increased airfares during the 2025 yuletide period.

AON described the FCCPC’s findings as misleading and potentially harmful to the survival of local airlines. In a statement, the AON spokesperson and United Nigeria Airline Chairman, Obiorah Okonkwo, said the commission lacks the expertise to assess airline pricing and accused it of making conclusions detached from operational realities.

“They don’t understand airline operations or how prices are set. This report plays to the gallery and should not be taken seriously. While we respect government agencies, we will not accept statements that ignore facts,” Okonkwo said.

During the festive season, some domestic airlines reportedly increased ticket prices on certain routes, particularly to the South-East and South-South regions, by over 131 per cent.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Tunji Bello, clarified that the interim report is part of the commission’s statutory duty to ensure competitive markets and protect consumers. Bello noted that further analysis is ongoing and that final regulatory actions will be based on comprehensive findings.

“The report is intended to shed light on pricing behaviour during predictable peak travel periods. Any next steps will be guided strictly by the law,” Bello stated.
