INEC PROMOTES 2,339 STAFF INCLUDING 45 TO DIRECTORS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the promotion of 2,339 staff members in its 2025 senior staff promotion exercise, aimed at rewarding merit, ensuring career progression, and maintaining institutional stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was taken at the Commission’s meeting on Thursday, February 26, 2026, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Director of Information and Voter Education, Mrs Victoria Eta-Messi.

Breakdown of promotions:

– Directorate level (GL 16–17): 45 deputy directors elevated to directors. Of these, 18 will remain in active service, while 27 are due for retirement shortly after promotion, in line with public service rules.

– GL 15–16: 91 assistant directors promoted to deputy directors.

– GL 14–15: 82 chief officers advanced to assistant directors.

– Intermediate officers (GL 07–13): 2,121 staff promoted across various departments.

The Commission emphasised that the exercise was conducted strictly in accordance with established guidelines and public service regulations.

INEC described the promotions as a reflection of its commitment to recognising dedication and sustaining leadership depth, especially as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.

Last week, INEC released the revised timetable for the 2027 polls, fixing:

– Presidential and National Assembly elections: January 16, 2027

– Governorship and State House of Assembly elections: February 6, 2027

The Commission congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to uphold professionalism, integrity, and impartiality in their duties.
