Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has earned global recognition by winning a $1 million innovation award in the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge. The city was selected from over 600 participating cities worldwide, making it one of only 25 finalists across 20 countries and one of just four African cities to reach this stage.

The award highlights Benin City’s ability to develop practical and impactful solutions to major urban challenges, with a focus on improving healthcare delivery.

Governor Monday Okpebholo praised the achievement as a reflection of the state government’s dedication to innovation and strengthening the healthcare system. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, the governor noted that the recognition demonstrates the city’s growing reputation as a center for forward-thinking governance and effective public sector reforms.

“This award is a testament to the innovation, resilience, and commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State. Bold ideas from Benin City are now competing and winning on the global stage,” Okpebholo said.
He congratulated the state Ministry of Health and the team behind the initiative while thanking the people of Edo State for their continued support of government programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge provides cities with funding and technical support to implement transformative ideas, making it one of the most competitive platforms for showcasing urban innovation worldwide.
