MISSILE HITS US EMBASSY HELIPAD IN IRAQ

Security officials have confirmed that a rocket struck the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad, according to a report by Associated Press.

Footage released by the news agency showed a thick column of smoke rising above the embassy complex on Saturday morning.

The sprawling diplomatic facility is one of the largest operated by the United States anywhere in the world and has previously been targeted in attacks by militias aligned with Iran.

Images circulating online also showed smoke and dust rising above the compound shortly after the strike.

There was no immediate response from the US embassy in Baghdad regarding the incident.

However, the embassy had renewed its Level Four security alert for Iraq on Friday, warning of possible security threats.

In the advisory, officials cautioned that Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups had previously carried out attacks against US citizens, facilities, and infrastructure in the country, and could continue to do so.

The latest incident comes just two days after a deadly aviation accident involving the US military. On Friday, United States Central Command confirmed that four crew members were killed when a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq.

According to the military, the aircraft went down at about 2 p.m. Eastern Time on March 12 while conducting operations in the region.
