POLICE PROBE VIRAL CLAIMS OF EXTORTION BY PERSONNEL IN ANAMBRA

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation after a video circulated online showing police personnel from Okpoko Divisional Police allegedly extorting a victim using a PoS operator.

The video claims that the officers arrested the victim, confiscated some of his belongings, and demanded a money transfer to avoid detention. The payment was reportedly processed through a PoS operator in the Okpoko area, with the funds sent to an undisclosed account. A voiceover in the video suggested that such payments were routinely demanded from other individuals in the area.

In response, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the video’s existence and said it had been intercepted and is under investigation. The Command’s Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a full and urgent probe to determine disciplinary actions in line with Nigeria Police Force regulations.

Ikenga added that the money allegedly collected from the victim has been returned, describing the incident as a serious case of unprofessional conduct. Preliminary findings indicate that the Divisional Police Officer at Okpoko had already begun steps to identify the officers involved. The involvement of the PoS operator also points to a possible conspiracy.

“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all citizens,” the statement read. “No officer found culpable will be shielded, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be enforced. Further updates will be communicated to the public.”
