TOGO MOVES TO INCREASE ELECTRICITY IMPORTS FROM NIGERIA

The Republic of Togo has expressed interest in increasing its electricity imports from Nigeria’s Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to meet rising demand and provide reliable power to newly connected consumers nationwide.

The request came during a strategic meeting between NDPHC and a delegation from Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET), led by its Director-General, Débo-K’mba Barandao. The discussions focused on strengthening existing cooperation and exploring ways to expand cross-border electricity trade.

Currently, CEET purchases about 75 megawatt-hours of electricity from NDPHC, helping maintain stable power supply for households, businesses, and public institutions in Togo. Barandao commended NDPHC for the reliability of its supply, describing the partnership as mutually beneficial and a key factor in improving power stability in the Togolese network.

With the onboarding of new industrial and commercial users, electricity demand in Togo is rising. CEET expressed strong interest in increasing its offtake from NDPHC to support the government’s strategy of expanding access and ensuring stable power for new customers.

Responding, NDPHC Managing Director and CEO, Jennifer Adighije, confirmed the company’s readiness to deepen collaboration. She noted that NDPHC operates multiple power plants under the National Integrated Power Project and has the capacity to support regional electricity supply, contributing to energy integration across West Africa.

Adighije emphasised that while NDPHC is willing to increase electricity exports to Togo, sustainable commercial arrangements are essential. She called for credible financial guarantees and structured payment mechanisms to mitigate risks associated with cross-border supply, ensuring the long-term viability of the partnership.

Both parties described the meeting as productive and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in the electricity sector. Plans were made to continue discussions on frameworks that would support increased power supply from Nigeria to Togo, strengthening regional energy ties and contributing to economic development.
