Residents reported hearing two powerful blasts that triggered widespread panic, causing many people to flee the areas and rush home for safety.

Borno State Police Command spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the incident via a post on his verified X account.

The statement read: “Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20 PM, joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed. The Police EOD Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, is on the ground.

“Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid the area while assessments continue. Further updates will follow shortly. Emergency Contacts: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.”

No official casualty or damage figures have been released yet, as security teams continue to assess the scenes.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after suspected insurgents reportedly infiltrated the Kofa community on the outskirts of Maiduguri but were repelled by security forces.

Maiduguri has faced repeated attacks in recent years from terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, with markets, hospitals, and public spaces frequently targeted.

Authorities are yet to attribute responsibility for the latest blasts, but the timing and locations have raised serious concerns about the safety of civilian areas during Ramadan.
