Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu on his assessment of the security situation in Maiduguri, Borno State, following his recent visit to the region.

His visit comes in the wake of last Monday’s deadly suicide bombings in Maiduguri, which claimed at least 23 lives and left over 100 people injured.

In a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday, Shettima said he visited Maiduguri on the directive of the President to meet with and console families affected by the attacks, as well as to assess the situation firsthand.

“The Vice President will brief the President on the outcome of his visit to Maiduguri to see families and communities affected by the tragic incidents in Borno State, as well as his on-the-spot assessment of the situation on the ground,” the statement read.

The Vice President is also expected to lead serving governors on a Sallah homage to the President after the briefing.

The coordinated attacks, which began around 7:02 p.m. on Monday, targeted key locations including the Maiduguri Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover, and a security post at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. According to police figures, 23 people were killed, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

During a visit to victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Shettima condemned the attacks as barbaric, stressing that no cause justifies the killing of innocent civilians.

He assured victims and their families of the Federal Government’s support through relevant agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the North East Development Commission.

Shettima also vowed that those responsible for the attacks would be brought to justice, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in Borno State and the wider Northeast region.
