A major dispute has reportedly broken out among family members over more than 35 properties linked to the late former Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, spanning Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Ghana.
Sources familiar with the matter say the conflict revolves around ownership and control of the late politician’s extensive estate, which includes residential buildings, commercial ventures, hotels, farms, media outlets, and financial institutions.
In Nigeria, the properties are spread across Ibadan, Lagos, Abuja, Ogbomoso, and other locations, with notable assets including a residence at No. 1 Oba Akinyele Avenue in Old Bodija, a guest house in Agodi GRA, Ibadan, plots of land in Aerodrome GRA and Samonda, and roughly 7,000 acres beside the Ibadan Golf Club. Commercial assets include Eternal Mega Filling Station, TDB Filling Station, NIPCO Filling Station, TDB Gas Plant, Parrot FM in Ogbomoso, as well as warehouses, farms, and Olowolagba Microfinance Bank.

Internationally, the estate includes a residence at 140-23 160th Street, Jamaica, Queens, New York, and another at 19 San Juan Drive, Chafford Hundred, Grays, Essex, United Kingdom. Plans for the estate also include a proposed Alao-Akala College of Health Sciences and Umera Farms on a 1,000-acre site in Ikoyi, Ogbomoso.
Sources say tensions have escalated due to the absence of a clear sharing formula, with disputes reportedly intensifying over control of the most lucrative properties. Attempts to reach an amicable resolution are ongoing, though insiders warn the conflict may lead to prolonged legal battles.
Recently, an Oyo State High Court in Ibadan issued an injunction restraining Chief Oluwakemi Alao-Akala from selling, disposing of, or entering any transaction involving the late governor’s properties. The order followed a motion filed by Oluwatoyin Alao Aderinto, seeking judicial oversight of the estate (Suit No. 1/443/2024).
The court barred the defendants, their agents, or anyone acting on their behalf from selling or entering joint venture agreements concerning any property linked to the late politician, pending the determination of the substantive suit.
