A faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) led by Tajudeen Baruwa has taken control of the union’s National Secretariat.
The union has been mired in internal disputes for the past two years following a delegates’ conference meant to elect new leadership. In November 2024, members elected MC Oluomo, Musiliu Akinsanya, as National President. However, a court ruling later favored Baruwa, sparking a prolonged leadership tussle.

Despite the legal ruling, MC Oluomo continued to occupy the National Secretariat. On Monday, the Baruwa-led faction moved in to assert control, with viral videos showing members removing and destroying MC Oluomo’s portraits.
Following the takeover, the Nigerian Police intervened, arresting individuals involved to restore order and prevent further escalation. The union remains in a delicate situation as both factions claim legitimacy.
