President Bola Tinubu has defended the Electoral Act 2026, describing persistent criticism from opposition groups as a disservice to Nigerians.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention, Tinubu said the law followed due process, including public hearings and legislative scrutiny by the National Assembly. He stressed that the Act reflects the country’s collective effort to strengthen its electoral system and deepen democracy.
According to him, while criticism is welcome in a democratic setting, repeated attacks on the law are misplaced. He also dismissed claims that the APC is pushing for a one-party state, insisting that democracy thrives on healthy competition and a credible opposition.

Tinubu urged party members to remain united, warning that internal divisions driven by personal ambition could weaken the party. He described the convention as a defining moment and called on members to recommit to discipline and shared values.
Reflecting on the party’s formation in 2013, he said the APC must stay true to its founding ideals of justice, development and inclusive governance. He also paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, urging members to uphold the vision of the party’s founding leaders.

On governance, the president said his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is already producing results despite economic challenges. He noted improvements in key indicators, including declining inflation, easing food prices, and growing investor confidence.
Tinubu highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, reforms in the oil and gas sector, and increased interest from foreign investors. He also acknowledged challenges in the power sector, saying efforts are underway to improve electricity supply through new initiatives.
Addressing young people, he encouraged greater youth participation in politics, not just as supporters but as decision-makers. He also called for increased inclusion of women, noting that empowering women would strengthen the party.
The president urged delegates and aspirants to conduct themselves peacefully during the convention, stressing that unity should remain the party’s ultimate goal regardless of outcomes.
