UBA SANI, RIBADU, SANUSI, ATIKU ATTEND EL-RUFAI’S MOTHER’S BURIAL IN ABUJA

A mix of political leaders, traditional rulers, and top business figures gathered in Abuja on Sunday to honour the late Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The funeral prayer (Jana’iza) took place at the National Mosque, drawing dignitaries from across the country. Among those present were Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Emir of Zazzau Ahmed Bamalli, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Also in attendance were prominent figures such as businessman Aliko Dangote, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami, and Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya.

The large turnout reflected the wide network and influence El-Rufai built over the years, cutting across political parties, regions, and backgrounds.

After the prayers, her remains were taken to Gudu Cemetery for burial according to Islamic rites. At the graveside, Pantami led prayers and reminded mourners of the importance of unity, forgiveness, and the fleeting nature of life.

Emotional moments were seen as he embraced both Uba Sani and El-Rufai, symbolising shared grief and reconciliation.

Earlier, Ribadu had visited the family to offer condolences, describing the late matriarch as a woman whose influence extended beyond her immediate family.

El-Rufai’s presence at the burial also came amid recent controversy surrounding his arrest and release. While some questioned the legal implications, others believed humanitarian reasons played a role in allowing him attend his mother’s final rites.

Family members and close associates described the late Umma El-Rufai as a disciplined and humble woman whose values shaped her son’s life and career.

Despite Nigeria’s often divided political space, the burial brought together allies and rivals alike—serving as a reminder that, beyond politics, moments of loss unite people in shared humanity.
