Fresh political alignments may be taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, as camps loyal to Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi have confirmed ongoing talks that could result in a joint presidential ticket.

Kwankwaso is expected to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he will be received by party leaders, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola. His move comes shortly after announcing his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for a broader political strategy in response to the country’s evolving political landscape.

The former Kano governor described his departure from the NNPP as a difficult decision but necessary to align with a platform that offers stronger prospects for national change. His expected defection is also likely to attract key allies, further strengthening the emerging coalition.
Recent interactions among major opposition figures have fueled speculation about a possible alliance. Kwankwaso recently met with Atiku Abubakar, while Obi paid him a visit in Kano alongside other political leaders, signaling growing cooperation among opposition blocs.

Supporters of both politicians say the idea of a joint ticket is gaining momentum among Nigerians, with some describing it as a potentially strong combination capable of reshaping the political landscape. They also hinted at the possibility of a wider coalition involving multiple opposition parties ahead of the next election cycle.

Despite the growing talks, both camps dismissed claims that a new political party is being considered, noting that forming a fresh party at this stage would not be practical. Instead, discussions appear focused on forming alliances within existing platforms.

Meanwhile, party representatives downplayed concerns over internal disputes and legal challenges, insisting that such issues are common across political parties. They also rejected allegations that recent public support for the leaders was staged, maintaining that the large crowds seen during political visits were genuine and spontaneous.
As consultations continue, political observers believe the outcome of these discussions could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race.
