LAGOS APC THROWS GOVERNORSHIP CONTEST OPEN

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that the governorship seat and other elective positions are open for contest, reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy ahead of the next elections.

State party chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, made this known during a meeting with local government chairmen, amid growing speculation over who will succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Recent reports had suggested that the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) might favour the current Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as a consensus candidate. Other names being mentioned include former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Seyi Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Hakeem Muri-Okunola.

However, Ojelabi dismissed any notion of exclusion, stressing that the race remains open to all qualified aspirants.

“In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, the party will adopt direct primaries as the first option for electing our candidates,” he said. “However, consensus arrangements will also be encouraged where possible, provided such agreements are freely reached and widely accepted.”

He added that the party is committed to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent process that gives every member an equal opportunity to contest.

“As a progressive party, we will provide a level playing field for all aspirants and ensure that the eventual candidates truly represent the will of the people,” Ojelabi stated.
