CBN CLEARS FLUTTERWAVE FOR BANKING LICENCE, FINTECH PAYMENTS HIT $40BN

Flutterwave, the Lagos-based fintech company, has obtained regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to operate banking services in the country. The development comes as the firm announced that it has processed over $40 billion in payments through its platform in just 10 years of operation.

The new banking licence allows Flutterwave to expand beyond its core payment infrastructure into broader financial services, signaling a significant step in Nigeria’s evolving fintech sector. The move highlights the trend of major fintech firms transitioning toward full-scale financial service offerings.

In addition, Flutterwave has been selected alongside other fintech companies, including Paystack, for a CBN pilot programme aimed at supervising virtual-asset-related activities. The initiative is intended to strengthen oversight of digital asset service providers and ensure compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards, shaping the future of Nigeria’s digital finance regulation.

Since its establishment in 2016, Flutterwave has grown from a cross-border payment gateway into one of Africa’s leading fintech platforms, building partnerships that allow businesses to accept payments globally. The company’s decade-long expansion across African markets demonstrates the rapid adoption of digital payments and its critical role in the continent’s financial technology ecosystem.

The combination of a banking licence, participation in the CBN’s virtual-asset pilot, and a decade of operational growth underscores Flutterwave’s increasing influence in Nigeria’s financial sector. The regulatory progress is expected to accelerate innovation in fintech, as companies and regulators work to balance rapid digital growth with enhanced oversight of emerging financial services.
