UK AUTHORITIES PUNISH NIGERIAN FOR USING CHATGPT DURING REMOTE INTERVIEW FOR NHS JOB

A Nigerian dietician has been removed from the UK professional register after using AI tools to answer questions during a remote NHS job interview.

The registered dietician, who was applying for an oncology role at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in March 2024, used ChatGPT to generate responses in real-time during the Microsoft Teams interview while she was in Nigeria. She reportedly asked the panel to repeat questions and then repeated them herself to buy time for AI-generated answers.

Members of the interview panel noticed significant similarities between her answers and ChatGPT outputs, raising concerns over cheating. Panelists also flagged her performance during a follow-up case study question as inconsistent with standard professional expectations.

Following a hearing at the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service (HCPTS), the tribunal concluded that the use of AI during the interview constituted misconduct, resulting in her being struck off the register.
