US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran, signaling a possible pause in escalating tensions between both sides.
According to Trump, the ceasefire is conditional on Iran reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to global shipping. He said the decision followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint to prevent further destruction.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would suspend planned military actions for two weeks, describing the move as part of a “double-sided ceasefire.” He added that both sides were already close to reaching a broader peace agreement, noting that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal which Washington considers a workable basis for negotiations.
Trump claimed that most major disagreements had been addressed and that the pause would allow both parties to finalise a long-term peace deal for the region.
Reports indicate that Israel has also agreed to halt its military operations in line with the ceasefire.
The announcement came just hours before a deadline earlier set by Trump, during which he had issued strong warnings about potential large-scale military action against Iran.
Reacting to the development, Iranian authorities described the agreement as a major victory, claiming it compelled the United States to consider its terms. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also stated that the proposed deal includes provisions for regulated access through the Strait of Hormuz under its supervision, as well as discussions around lifting sanctions.
While the ceasefire offers a brief window for diplomacy, global attention remains fixed on whether both sides will honour the terms and move toward a lasting resolution.
